Not to be confused with the equally silly yet infinitely better Judgment Night starring Emilio Estevez, Judgment Day purports to be about an asteroid on a collision course with Earth. But that seemingly important storyline takes a backseat to felon Ice-T and FBI agent Suzy Amis chasing down a wackjob religious guru (Mario Van Peebles) to rescue the very important scientist he's kidnapped. Peebles believes that the destruction of Earth is God's will, and no one has the right to attempt to stop it.
The argument does arise that perhaps God's will is to actually have this scientist stop the rock, but who needs that logic when your movie also features Coolio and Tommy "Tiny" Lister?
Random musing: Why do all Direct To Video flicks have soundtracks that sound like a toy you can get out of a cereal box? As a kid I had a Casio keyboard that made more legitimate orchestra sounds than these scores have.
There are some mildly amusing moments here and there (particularly a bizarre car ride conversation between Ice T and Amis where the topics range from chicken and waffles to the downside of prison sex), but then you take a step back and remember that this is an asteroid movie. Then you get mad because no one in the movie remembers that.
Amis of course married James Cameron the next year, ensuring she'd never have to appear in anything ever again.
